What is a teeth cleaning?
Dental or teeth cleaning, also called prophylaxis or tartrectomy, is a preventive treatment for possible dental diseases and the treatment most requested at our dental clinic.
It involves removing accumulated plaque or tartar both on the teeth and under the gums. The treatment is performed with ultrasound devices, although some cases may require a manual cleaning. The cleaning takes approximately 30 minutes.Either the dental hygienist or the dentist performs the cleaning and will assess if additional treatment is necessary.
Teeth cleaning is generally painless and local anesthesia is not required. There are, however, patients who suffer from severe dental hypersensitivity who might find a teeth cleaning uncomfortable.
The patient may notice some sensitivity after a cleaning, but it will disappear after 24-48 hours.
How are teeth cleanings performed?
The professional will first perform a thorough checkup of the patient’s mouth to locate any issues like tartar, gingivitis, cavities, etc.
Visible build-up and stains will be removed using an ultrasound device.
The surface of the teeth are then polished using a rubber cup or brush with prophylaxis paste. If the enamel is still stained or the surface is rough, polishing will be completed using an instrument that expels a high-pressure jet of bicarbonate water.
Is teeth cleaning recommended for everyone?
Anyone who does not have a serious disease like periodontitis or pyorrhea can get their teeth cleaned. Should the patient have any of these diseases, a periodontal treatment should be performed first.
Once-a-year teeth cleanings are generally recommended, but the dentist will determine if multiple cleanings are necessary or, in the worst case, if another treatment is required to prevent gum disease.
Advantages of teeth cleaning
There are countless advantages to getting your teeth cleaned, but the main one is that it prevents oral problems like tartar, halitosis, gingivitis, periodontitis, etc. Bacterial plaque and superficial stains are eliminated. Also, gum inflammation is reduced and the teeth’s enamel is strengthened for a clean and healthy mouth.
It is important to clarify that the cleaning does not change the color of the enamel; a specific dental whitening treatment is required for patients who want a whiter smile.
