Dental whitening in Barcelona

Teeth Whitening is a treatment that we carry out at our dental clinic in Barcelona, Casanova 25, in order to lighten the shade of tooth colour. Teeth become stained for different reasons. There are pre-natal stains (before birth), other pre-eruptive stains (originating from a prior eruption of the teeth) and those relating to fluorosis if affecting the tooth enamel, such as dentinogenesis imperfecta if it affects the development of dentin.

How does a teeth whitening procedure work

Before carrying out a whitening treatment, a dental cleaning exercise must be carried out the day before, in order to avoid bleeding gums or sensitive teeth. At the time of whitening, every patient will need:

  • Instrumental exploratory teeth whitening kit.
  • Polymerization lamp (cold light).
  • Saliva aspirator.
  • C/A with brush for polishing before and after application of bleaching product.
  • Mouth retractor.
  • Oral separator.
  • First, the lip retractor and gum protector are applied and record is taken of tooth colour prior to application of the product.
  • We will apply bleaching product on visible surfaces of the teeth without touching the gums
  • The product is left for the time designated by the manufacturer, and in the same cycle recommended by the manufacturer. Some are 3 cycles of 15 minutes and others from 3 to 8 minutes, it will depend on the manufacturer. Their instructions must ALWAYS be followed.
  • Remove the product and rinse with plenty of water.
  • Apply desensitizing gel.
  • Take a photo of the result.

It is VERY IMPORTANT to isolate the soft tissues properly with the gum protector, retractors and tongue separators in order to avoid contact with the acid as it can damage and burn.

If hydrogen peroxide comes into contact with the gums, tongue or cheeks, it can cause burns. Should this occur, rinse well and apply vitamin E directly to the affected area, as this vitamin will neutralize any reaction. < / p>

It is very important to record the tooth colour before and after the treatment, as often patients get used to the final result and forget what their original shade looked like.

All patients must have had a full consultation and examination prior to the first whitening treatment. All caries and abscesses must be treated, as well as any periodontal therapy completed, prior to whitening.

It is important to establish the expectations of the patient prior to whitening. These must be realistic, with an explanation of what to expect.

POST TREATMENT

In order to maintain the result, it is important that for 72 hours after treatment the patient does not consume tobacco, tea, coffee, red wine, mustard, artichokes, beets, cherries, strawberries, blackberries, chocolate, cocoa, squid ink, dyes or saffron.

A little sensitivity is normal during this treatment. If there is post-treatment sensitivity, colourless fluoride gel is recommended, together with plenty of rinsing with water and an analgesic, and this should suffice.

Is teeth whitening recommended for everyone?

  • We do not recommend this treatment for hypersensitive patients or for those with unrealistic expectations.

Of all the bleaching agents, OXIDATIVES are the most effective and are the ones we use at Clínica Dental Casanova 25, in combination with prior dental cleaning, whereby we use sodium bicarbonate to remove external stains and dyes adhering to the visible surfaces of the teeth.
