Endodontics in Barcelona

Endodontics is the branch of dentistry dedicated to the preventive diagnosis and treatment of the root canals inside the teeth. It is a treatment that seeks to avoid dental loss.

Endodontics is performed when there is nerve damage caused by deep caries, trauma, dental wear and tear, restorative treatments previously performed on that tooth, restoration materials (given that occasionally toxic materials or acids are used very close to the nerve, and this can cause pulpar injuries).

How are endodontics performed?

A series of phases are required which, if rigorously implented, will result in a successful root canal treatment (endodontics). They are:

  • Application of local anaesthesia.
  • Isolation of the affected tooth using a rubber dam and clamp.
  • Opening of canal , consisting of the removal of faceted tissue and, once this is done, a perforation will be used to locate the dental pulp and expose it in its entirety.
  • Conductometry , is the location and permeabilization of all the canals of the tooth to be treated, given that depending on the tooth to be treated we may be facing 1,2 3 or 4 canals per tooth. And in this conductometry phase we determine the exact length of the duct to be removed, doing so with files and with the help of an apex locator.
  • Instrumentation , once each of the canals has been measured, we widen them using rotary files, which also serves to remove and eliminate all the nervous-vascular tissue that runs through the interior of each duct.
  • Obturation , once each duct has been completely emptied and disinfected, they must be sealed and filled, which is when we enter the obturation phase with heated materials such as gutta-percha.
  • Restoration of the tooth , once the root area of the tooth has been treated, the coronal part of the tooth is restored, packing it with filling or pins or crowns. We thereby fill in the area through which we have drilled in order to access the nerves.

Endodontics is colloquially known as killing the nerve, but in fact consists of the removal in its entirety of the dental pulp (which is made up of nerves, arteries and veins) that will later be replaced with a special material (cement and gutta-percha).

FAQs about Endodontics in Barcelona

Does root canal treatment hurt?

No, as it is performed under local anaesthesia. But once the consultation is over, there may be some discomfort in the treated tooth for some 3 to 7 days, which can be relieved by taking analgesics and anti-inflammatories.

How long does a root canal treatment take?

It will depend on the specialist, but if the patient presents with pain or infection it will usually be completed within two appointments, but if this is not the case, the treatment can be completed with just one appointment.

Once the root canal procedure has been done, is the treatment finished?

No, the tooth upon which the root canal treatment was performed will need to be reconstructed, and a dental crown is most usually recommended for this purpose.

When should root canal treatment be performed?

Once we have made a correct diagnosis and established the presence of an irreversible pulp process.
