What advantages do dental implants provide?

As you already know, we’ve performed over 1,000 dental implants at our dental clinic in Barcelona. This experience has allowed us to refine our technique and achieve excellent results that provide the following advantages once the dental implant is placed:

  • Natural feeling
  • Healthier teeth
  • Better cosmetic dentistry
  • Better smile
  • Improved chewing

Many of you likely still have doubts about wearing implants, despite these advantages. Today we respond to three common questions that our patients in Barcelona have:

Are implants permanent? Do they last a lifetime?

Implants may last less than expected if not cared for properly. Patients must ensure that they care for their mouth in general: excellent oral hygiene of teeth and implants combined with regular periodontal and implant maintenance check-ups (every 4-6 months). Implants can become inflamed (mucositis) or infected (peri-implantitis) if risk factors are not properly controlled, including: oral hygiene, tobacco use and periodontal disease. Properly caring for dental implants can extend their useful life by many years.

Do I have to take care of dental implants?

Implants should be taken care of the same way as natural teeth. A dental implant requires proper oral hygiene to prevent diseases like mucositis and peri-implantitis. Many people believe that “all their problems are over” if all their teeth are extracted and implants are placed. Some also believe that, since they’re made of materials like titanium, they are not at risk of infection and cannot deteriorate or lose functionality. But that is not true; implants, like teeth, require regular and professional check-ups and hygiene, essential elements of excellent oral hygiene and keys to keeping implants healthy and infection free.

Can any dentist put in implants?

The dental professional who places the implants must be well trained and skilled in implants and implant surgery. Implant therapy requires extensive knowledge and an important skill. The dentist must not only be well trained in implants but must also be prepared to carry out and evaluate the x-rays of the area where the implants are to be placed.
