What are the different types of braces and what do they do?
Are you thinking about getting braces for yourself or your children? This post covers everything you need to know about braces: what they’re for and what types are currently available. Keep reading!
At our Casanova25 clinic we’re specialists in customized braces in Barcelona, taking into account our patients’ individual needs to help them choose the best treatment option.
But before we get into the different types of teeth-aligning options available, it’s important to know what brace are and the benefits they have on oral health.
What are braces?
Dental braces are devices used in orthodontics that apply force and pressure to help correctly position teeth. They are used to:
- Straighten teeth
- Correct an irregular bite
- Align the teeth and lips
- Close unsightly gaps
Braces are also used in other areas of dentistry (such as cosmetic dentistry and dental implants). In addition, orthodontic treatment for children can assist in correctly shaping the jaw and teeth.
Types of braces
Metallic braces. These are the most common and well-known type of braces, but increasingly more patients are opting for other more modern and aesthetic alternatives. Stainless steel brackets and wires are normally used.
Ceramic or porcelain braces. Ceramic or porcelain braces are a popular option for aesthetic reasons, since the brackets are made out of a ceramic material that is the same color as the teeth (not metal, although the wire connecting the brackets is), making them much less noticeable.
Lingual braces. These types of braces are a popular option for aesthetic reasons because they are placed on the inside of the bite instead of the outside for a barely visible system. This option is an outstanding option for adult patients who want braces that are far less likely to be noticed.
Invisalign invisible “braces”.Invisalign aligners are different from other braces because they can be removed; the patient doesn’t have to wear them all the time. Made-to-measure plastic aligners use micro-movements to progressively shift the teeth into alignment. These braces are essentially invisible and, since they can be removed, they can be far more comfortable than traditional braces.
Only certified trained orthodontic specialists can provide Invisalign treatment. The experts at our dental clinic in Barcelona are accredited to work with Invisalign, so you can trust that you’re in good hands for any of the range of orthodontic treatments we provide.
