The differences between the overdenture and the hybrid prostheses on implants
In today’s article we want to explain the differences between implant-support overdentures and hybrid prostheses. This isn’t to say that one is better than the other: each provides specific solutions that might be more beneficial depending on the patient’s particular case.

We advise all our patients individually at our dental clinic in Barcelona so that when it comes to choosing a prosthesis, they make their choice with the confidence and security of knowing that it’s the one that best suits their unique needs.

To begin, let's define an overdenture and a hybrid prosthesis.

What is a hybrid prosthesis?

A hybrid prosthesis is an innovative type of implant surgery used for teeth replacement, providing the patient with new teeth that are attached to the jaw.
These prostheses consist of a metallic structure that in turn supports artificial teeth that can be made of acrylic or porcelain. This implant-supported hybrid prosthesis requires a dental bridge with at least six osseointegrated implants.

Hybrid dentures are recommended when the patient has advanced bone loss in the jaw. This type of denture is more natural looking and stable and requires at least four to six dental implants to create a solid base for the denture. The denture is then permanently attached to the implants.

The patient cannot remove the prosthesis because it is an attached structure that is screwed onto the implants. This prosthesis offers patients excellent predictability, esthetics, and comfort.

What is an overdenture?

The overdenture is a type of removable prosthesis that covers and rests on dental implants using an attachment system that allows the patient to remove the denture. This makes it easier to maintain proper oral hygiene, since the teeth can be removed and cleaned.

How to choose which prosthesis or overdenture is best for the patient

Hybrid prostheses are recommended for patients who want a type of prosthesis that is attached and cannot be removed.

The overdenture is an alternative, offering stability yet also removability for easier cleaning.

In either case, our specialist makes a personalized and tailored diagnosis for each patient and can assess and recommend the best option for your individual case.
